Ratification of Policies
Board of Management Agreed Report
Tuesday February 28th 2017
￼The following policies were ratified by the Board of Management at this meeting:
• New Anti Cyber Bullying Policy
• Revised Critical Incident Policy
These policies come into effect immediately. These policies will be available to download from the school website www.creaghns.com Hard copies will also be available on request from the secretary’s office.
The school’s SPHE plan is currently being reviewed. A new RSE Policy is currently being drafted.
Planning permission has been granted to build a new classroom. This additional accommodation is required as a result of the reduction in the pupil teacher ratio and it will be fully funded by the DES.
Whole staff training took place in January in the use of the software programme Read, Write and Gold Software. This training was funded by the Special Education Support Service.
Fun Friends and Friends for Life Programmes: Two teachers have recently been trained in the Fun Friends/Friends for Life Programmes. This training was funded by the BOM. There are now a total of four teachers trained to deliver this programme in the school.
Revised Stay Safe and Walk Tall Programmes
Whole staff training in the Revised Stay Safe and Walk Tall Programmes took place on February 1st. This training was provided by the PDST. The Stay Safe Programme is covered with all classes during the period January-March. A record is kept of the topics covered.
CPR/AED Training: A number of staff has been trained in CPR and the use of the AED Unit. The BOM wishes to thank Mr Joe Fahy, Portiuncula Hospital and Helen and Declan Harney for providing this training. Further training will now be arranged for the remainder of the staff.
Use of iPads in the Classroom will take place in April and this will be funded by Athlone Education Centre.
Relationships and Sexuality Education Training, provided by the PDST, will be attended by two teachers in March. A new RSE School Policy is currently being drafted.
New Primary Language Curriculum: May 3rd. School will close on this day to facilitate this training day for all teaching staff as directed by the Department of Education and Skills.
￼￼￼iPads for Pupils
An order has now been placed for 22 iPads, 22 covers, 2 transportable charging units, covers and software. Sincere thanks to the school’s IT co-ordinator Ms Regina Power for all of her work researching this area and evaluating quotations. Further details will issue once the order has been received. The staff will attend training in the use of iPads in the classroom in April. This will not incur any cost to the school.
The Board wishes to thank the staff for all of the lovely Christmas Plays/Performances in December.
Well done to the Sixth Class pupils and their teachers for raising €830 in aid of Ballinasloe Social Services and the Lions Club. Cheques for €415 were issued to each of these organisations.
Confirmation and First Holy Communion Programmes for 2017
Programme of events in preparation for the reception of the sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion were issued to families in January.
Catholic Schools Week 2017
The school celebrated Catholic Schools Week, which began on January 29th.
Fr O’ Donovan celebrated a prayer service with the 6th class pupils and their teachers.
Upcoming School Events
Engineers’ Weeks: Engineers’ Week will take place from March 6th-10th. Sincere thanks to the school’s Science co-ordinator, Mrs Aine Bleahene who has a range of events organised for pupils.
Seachtain na Gaeilge: The school will commence the celebration of Seachtain na Gaeilge on Friday March 10th until Thursday March 16th. Sincere thanks to the school’s Gaeilge co-ordinator Ms Majella O’ Rourke for organising a range of activities this week. A Díolachán Cáca (Cake Sale) will be hosted by the 6th class pupils and their teachers on Thursday March 16th. All proceeds are in aid of Tanzania.
Fun Friends/Friends for Life Meeting Parents/Guardians of the 6th class pupils will be invited to an information meeting on March 7th. The Friends for Life Programme will commence with 6th class on March 9th.
The priests of the parish visited the school for Christmas Confessions on December 12th.
Priests’ Visits to the School
Fr O’ Donovan in his role as Chairperson and Fr Garvey and Fr Kieran continue with their school visits.
Fr Mc Inerney and Sr Patrice will visit the school in their roles as Diocesan Advisors on March 21st
Community Garda Visits
Sergeant Christy Browne has been visiting the pupils over the past few weeks.
Ballinasloe Town Band Visit
Members of the Ballinasloe Town Band visited the school on January 25th.
￼￼￼Garbally Students host science workshops in Creagh NS
Pupils from Garbally College, many of them past pupils, and their teacher Ms Amanda Hurst visited the school on February 17th to host science workshops for our pupils. The BOM is very grateful to all who give willingly and generously of their time to visit the pupils in our school.
Ballinasloe Social Services
Representatives from Ballinasloe Social Services, Mr Padraig Ó Ceithearnaigh Chairperson, Ms Annette Lynagh and Ms Teresa Coughlan (Manager) attended a school assembly to accept a cheque from the school. Mr Padraig Ó Ceithearnaigh thanked all of those involved in the making and selling of the St Brigid’s Day Crosses which raised €5409 in aid of Ballinasloe Social Services.
Bishop Kirby’s Visit
Bishop Kirby will visit the Confirmation class on May 2nd.
Health and Safety
• A representative from Allianz, the school’s insurance company was invited to the school for a walk around the premises. He also reviewed the School’s Health and Safety Statement.
• The annual service of the school’s fire safety equipment took place earlier this month.
School Participation and Successes
• Credit Union Quiz
The Board congratulates the four teams that represented Creagh NS in the first round of the Credit Union Quiz competition. One of the Under 11 teams qualified for the next round, which will take place in Athlone next Sunday March 5th. Sincere thanks to all teachers involved in preparing them, especially Mrs Aine Bleahene. The Board acknowledges with thanks the receipt of a cheque for €125 for the winning team from Ballinasloe Credit Union.
• Spikeball Competition
Congratulations to the spikeball teams for their participation in the Galway Blitz. One of the boys’ teams qualified for the Regional Final, which takes place in Loughrea on March 2nd. Sincere thanks to Mrs Caroline Gallagher and Mrs Mary Barrett for training the teams and to Fr Garvey for the use of the Emerald Ballroom for training.
Congratulations to all of the pupils who represented Creagh NS at the recent National Aquatics Final in Dublin. Well done to Ballinasloe Swimming Club on the great work that they do training the children.
• St Brigid’s Day Crosses
Congratulations to all involved in the recent fundraising project in aid of Ballinasloe Social Services. The sale of the St Brigid’s Day crosses raised €5409. Sincere thanks to Ms Regina Power for co-ordinating this project again this year and to Ms Antoinette Blade. Sincere thanks also to Mr Anthony Blade who continues to give willingly and generously of his time to pass on the craft of making these crosses to future generations.
The school participated in the “10 at 10” event. This involved all staff and pupils engaging in physical activity at 10a.m. on February 10th for 10 minutes. Sincere thanks to Mrs Mary Barrett and our Student Council for co-ordinating the event in the school.
Creagh NS Parents’ Association
The Board congratulates the Parents’ Association on their recent successful Table Quiz.

Vote of Sympathy
The BOM expresses its sympathy to the Hardiman Family on the recent death of Mrs Mary Hardiman R.I.P.
Our sympathy to all those recently bereaved.
The treasurer presented a detailed report to the BOM.
Voluntary Contribution Scheme
The Board is grateful to parents/guardians for their ongoing support to the school’s Voluntary Contribution Scheme. The scheme will be reviewed before the end of this school year to evaluate if the changes made this year have been effective.

A Special Meeting to discuss Enrolment for 2017/18 will take place on Monday April 3rd. Please note the closing date for completed enrolment applications is March 31st.
