AGREED REPORT FROM BOM MEETING September 24th 2018

Election of Parent Nominee to the BOM

The Board of Management wishes to express its thanks to Ms Caroline Kerr for her great work as a member of the BOM. As Caroline’s children have now finished their primary education in Creagh NS, a vacancy has arisen for a Parent Nominee (Mother) on the Board for the remainder of the term of office for this BOM (30th November 2019). The Chairperson will convene a meeting to facilitate the nominations and election of a Parent Nominee. Further details will issue shortly.

Policy Review and Development for 2018/19

• School’s Admissions Policy: The BOM will review this policy in light of new legislation due to be commenced shortly.

• SPHE Policy Review and Draft New RSE Policy

• Policy for Supporting Pupils with Special Educational Needs based on the

new model of support.

• Data Audit and Update Data Retention Policy in light of GDPR

• Annual Review of Child Safeguarding Statement (March 2019)

• Review Code of Behaviour

• Annual Review of Anti Bullying Policy (January 2019)

• Digital Framework for Learning Policy/Statement

Ratification of Health, Safety and Welfare Policy

The Board of Management ratified the Health, Safety and Welfare Policy, with immediate effect, at this meeting. The Board acknowledges with thanks the great work of the Safety Committee and in particular of teaching staff member, Mrs Mary Barrett.

Pupil Safety and Welfare

The safety of our pupils remains our priority at all times. Please note the following:

1. Child Safeguarding Statement is on display in the school and is reviewed on an annual basis.

• Designated Person for Child Protection: Ms Stephanie Keating, Principal

• Deputy Designated Person for Child Protection: Mr Noel Lohan, Deputy

Principal.

2. Parking

The BOM acknowledges the efforts being made by families in relation to parking safely and driving with extra care around the school and church grounds, particularly at peak times. The BOM welcomes the increase in the number of pupils walking to school as this is reducing the volume of traffic.

3. Parents are reminded that the official opening time is 9.20a.m.

School Self Evaluation

The BOM acknowledges the staff’s great work and the school’s engagement with the process of School Self Evaluation. Staff is currently agreeing areas of focus for the current cycle of School Self Evaluation 2018/2020.

Extra Curricular Activities

The BOM is very grateful to those who give freely and willingly of their time after school hours to coach pupils.

Treasurer’s Report

The treasurer presented a detailed report to the BOM, which included an income and expenditure account for 2017/18 and the proposed budget for 2018/19, which was adopted by the BOM. The Board expresses its sincere thanks to the treasurer, Ivan Kelly for his trojan work overseeing our school accounts and to school secretary Ann Haynes for her great administrative work in this area.

Voluntary Contribution

It was agreed by the BOM that there will be no change from the last two years to the Voluntary Contribution Scheme this year. A letter will issue from the Chairperson and the Treasurer in October. Your ongoing support through this scheme is very much appreciated.

NEPS Service to the School

The BOM is very disappointed to learn that there is currently no educational psychologist attached to the school. The National Educational Psychologist service is recruiting new staff and expects to resolve this situation as soon as possible. The BOM proposes writing to the regional director of NEPs. The BOM wishes to express its thanks to Dr Niamh Flynn, the psychologist attached to our school last year, and wishes her well in her new position.

School Inspector

A new inspector, Mr Martin Whyte, has been appointed to our school. The BOM expresses its thanks to our former inspector Mr Nicholas Cosgrave and wishes him well for the future.

New Classroom

The BOM wishes to express its thanks to the DES for funding the new classroom, to the design consultants, Dolan and Associates and to the building contractors, T.Murray and Son Ltd. A date for the official opening will issue from the Board shortly.

Minor Works

Rooms 10 and 14 have been painted and new shelving and blinds have been installed in these two classrooms, which are now the two Junior Infant rooms. The BOM is very grateful to the school’s caretaker, Joseph Murphy for his trojan work in the school during the summer months.

Maximising the Playground Areas

The BOM is in consultation with professionals in relation to the drainage of the pitch with a view to improving and maximising its use throughout the year.

The Committee set up by the BOM to consider ways in which the playground areas might be maximised will meet this term.

Fundraising for Technology

The BOM is very grateful to Ms Regina Power and Ms Antoinette Blade for organising the forthcoming Toy Sale on September 27th in aid of purchasing additional iPads for the school. The BOM greatly appreciates the support of staff, pupils and parents.

Parents’ Association

The BOM is very grateful to the school’s Parents’ Association for all of their support and wishes them well for the coming school year.

Priests of the Parish

The BOM wishes Fr John Garvey the very best for his sabbatical this year.

The BOM is very grateful to Fr Bernie and Fr Kieran for their pastoral support to our school. Sincere thanks also to Fr Kieran for celebrating the Beginning of Year School Mass on September 18th.

Congratulations

• To teaching staff member Ms Emer Moran on the birth of her daughter.

• To past pupil Shane Jennings and the Galway Minor Hurling Team on their

great victory in the All Ireland Final.

• To all of our past pupils on their Leaving Certificate Results. The Board wishes

them well for the future.

• To teaching staff members Ms Elaine Dolan, Mr Eric Ward and Ms Aine Dooley

who have secured permanent positions in other schools. Sincere thanks to each of them for their great work in our school.

Vote of Sympathy

The BOM expresses its sympathy to the Keighery Family on the recent death of Mr Peter Keighery R.I.P.

The BOM expresses its sympathy to all families in our school community who have been bereaved recently.

Calendar for 2018/19

The Board of Management agrees the school calendar each year in accordance with DES Circulars. A copy of the calendar for 2018/19 may be viewed in your child’s journal and on the school website www.creaghns.com

Presidential Election

The BOM wishes to inform the school community that the school will remain open on October 26th, the date of the Presidential Election, as the school has not been requested as a Polling Station.

Staff Training in the New Primary Language Curriculum

There will be an additional school closure to facilitate ongoing staff training in the New Primary Language Curriculum later this school year. You will be advised of this date once it has been confirmed.

School Attendance

The Education Welfare Officer liaises with the Principal on an ongoing basis throughout the year in relation to school attendance. Please ensure that your child attends school daily unless there is a legitimate reason for his/her absence.

The Board of Management wishes the staff, pupils and parents the very best for the coming school year. The work, dedication and commitment of our school community is greatly appreciated.
