Agreed Report from the Board of Management Meeting

6th December 2012

1. Review of Policy

A committee to oversee the Review of the Anti Bullying and Code of Behaviour Policy has been established. The members are as follows:

Stephanie Keating, Principal.

Áine Bleahene and Frank Gallagher: BOM Representatives

Majella O’ Rourke, Ann Farrell and Laura Gallagher: Staff Representatives

Ann Lohan and Fidelma Mc Manus: Parents’ Representatives

The Committee will meet in early January. Current policies for these areas are available to all parents who have been invited to make submissions as part of the review process.

2. Bullying:

Representatives from the BOM will attend the evening presentation by Marion Flanagan from the Anti Bullying Centre, Trinity College, Dublin on Wednesday December 12th 2012. The BOM encourages parents to attend.

3. Literacy and Numeracy

The Staff attended an excellent workshop on the area of Problem Solving in Mathematics last Wednesday, December 5th 2012. Neighbouring schools were also invited to attend.

4. School Self Evaluation

The questionnaires for staff, parents and pupils in relation to school self evaluation will be issued on Tuesday December 11th 2012. There will be no homework that evening to enable families to complete same and return to the school the following day.

5. Parent Teacher Meetings

Teachers have met with parents of pupils in 1st-6th classes. Parents speak very highly of the commitment of the staff to their children. The Principal also endorsed the tremendous work of the staff.

6. Minor Improvement Work

The entire re insulation of the attic has been prioritised for the very near future. Funding has been made available by the DES to ensure that the insulation meets all of the required specifications. It is hoped that this work will help to reduce the overall cost of heating the school. It is also a vital measure in protecting the school against frost damage.

7. Christmas Fayre

The BOM wishes to thank the Parents’ Association for the very successful Christmas Fayre which they organised on December 2nd. All families who supported this very enjoyable day were also thanked.

8. Bag Packing

The BOM supports the forthcoming fundraising event on December 23rd 2012. It is hoped that the bag packing event in Tesco in aid of the school will raise funds towards the drainage of the school pitch.

9. Science Week

The BOM wishes to thank all of those involved in the recent and very successful science week which was organised by Science Co-ordinator, Áine Bleahene. Many thanks to Áine, to the Principals of Garbally and Ard Scoil Mhuire who released staff and pupils to present excellent workshops to the pupils. The Chairperson of the BOM will write to the two Principals and to teaching staff, Mrs Teresa Fletcher and Ms Amanda Hurst.

Treasurer’s Report

Claire Mc Greal, Treasurer to the BOM presented her detailed monthly report to the BOM. The certified end of school year accounts, which have now been returned by the independent accountant, Liam O’ Brien & Co were also discussed. The accounts will be sent to the Patron of the School and are available to staff and parents at the Principal’s Office. The BOM acknowledged the tremendous work of the treasurer, Claire Mc Greal.

Mrs Hurley’s Retirement from the Teaching Staff

The Board of Management wishes to thank Mrs Agnes Hurley, Assistant Principal for her dedicated service to Creagh NS for over 35 years. The BOM acknowledges the tremendous contribution that Mrs Hurley has made to the education of many, many pupils over the course of her career as a mainstream teacher, a resource teacher and in the past as a teacher of the Special Class. In addition Agnes has been a Special Duties Post Holder and Assistant Principal. In this role Agnes has been a key member of the In school Management Team. She has also been instrumental in the setting up of the school’s state of the art library. As the school librarian, she has continued to ensure that the library remains stocked with a very wide range of high quality, age appropriate books. Furthermore, Agnes has monitored and promoted school attendance. To the delight of many pupils, she has presented termly attendance certificates and annual certificates and trophies in recognition of the students’ excellent attendance. The BOM would like to make a presentation to Mrs Hurley. Therefore, in keeping with Agnes’ wishes, the BOM will make a donation in her name to Pieta House in Loughrea.

Next Meeting of the BOM: Date in January 2013 to be confirmed.
