Easter 2017 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you are aware our Chairperson, Fr Daniel O’ Donovan is ill in hospital. We continue to remember him in our thoughts and prayers each day and we pray for his full recovery. Bishop Kirby has appointed Board Member, Mr Frank Gallagher as Acting Chairperson of the Board of Management.

Ratification of Policies

The following school policies were ratified by the Board of Management on February 28th 2017:

• New Anti Cyber Bullying Policy

• Revised Critical Incident Policy

These policies came into effect immediately and are now available to download from the school website www.creaghns.com Hard copies are also available on request from the secretary’s office.

Policy Review

The school’s SPHE Plan is currently being reviewed. A new RSE Policy is currently being drafted.

The annual review of our Child Protection Policy by the Board of Management will take place during the last term of this school year.

Additional Accommodation

Planning permission has been granted to build a new classroom. We will keep you informed as we progress through the building process.

New iPads

22 iPads and two charging trolleys have now been purchased. We look forward to using them to support the pupils’ learning. Sincere thanks to Ms Regina Power, the school’s IT co-ordinator, for her enormous input into this area. Staff training in the use of iPads in the classroom, funded by Athlone Education Centre will take place this Wednesday. Once again we thank you most sincerely for supporting our fundraising campaign, which enabled us to make this investment.

Revised Stay Safe and Walk Tall Programmes

Whole staff training in the Revised Stay Safe and Walk Tall Programmes took place on February 1st. The Stay Safe Programme is covered with all classes during the period January-March. A record is kept of the topics covered with each class. We encourage you to view the new Stay Safe Programme and resource materials online at pdst.ie/staysafe If you require any further information in relation to the programme, please contact the school.

CPR/AED Training: A number of staff has been trained in CPR and the use of the AED Unit. Our sincere thanks to Mr Joe Fahy, Portiuncula Hospital and Helen and Declan Harney for providing this training. Further training will now be arranged for the remainder of the staff.

School Participation and Successes

Spikeball All Ireland Competition

Congratulations to our spikeball teams for their participation in the Galway Blitz in Loughrea. One of our boys’ teams won the title of Regional Champions and they went on to represent Creagh NS in the All Ireland Final in Limerick. Well done to Charlie Naughton, Sean Mc Dermott, Jason Cunningham, Alain Brooks, Dylan Campi, Shane Fitzpatrick, Aaron Cunningham and Joey Tierney for a magnificent performance in the All Ireland. The boys won all of their matches to qualify for the final. The boys were runners up in the final. Sincere thanks to Mrs Caroline Gallagher and Mrs Mary Barrett for training the teams and to Fr Garvey for the use of the Emerald Ballroom for training.

St Patrick’s Day Parade

We are delighted to have won first prize in the educational category and overall winners for our school’s intercultural entry One World One People in this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. We acknowledge with thanks receipt of the Tony Colohan Memorial Award and a cheque for €150 from the St Patrick’s Day Committee. Our thanks to the pupils, staff and parents for co-ordinating and supporting our entry.

Credit Union Quiz

We congratulate the four teams that represented Creagh NS in the first round of the Credit Union Quiz competition. One of our Under 11 teams came first and qualified for the second round, which took place in Athlone on Sunday March 5th. Well done to the following pupils who represented our school:

Under 11: Winners of round 1 and achieved 4th place in the second round: Dean Kelly, Fionnán Seale, Niall Jennings, Cameron Keighery.

Under 11: Samuel Godswill, Abaigh Hardiman, Leon Mc Keon, Ferdia Mc Donagh Under 13: Dylan Campi, Alex O’ Leary, Charlie Naughton, Shauna Mitchell

Sincere thanks to all of the teachers involved in preparing them, especially Mrs Aine Bleahene. We acknowledge with thanks the receipt of a cheque for €125 for the winning team from Ballinasloe Credit Union.

Garda Quiz

Congratulations to our quiz team Éabha Mc Cann, Shauna Mitchell, Sean Mc Dermott and Dylan Campi who came 4th in the recent Garda Quiz. Well done to all.

Swimming

Congratulations to all of the pupils who represented Creagh NS at the National Minor School Championships in Dublin on February 12th : Kayla Mc Keon, Sarah Dolan, Sheenagh Hanrahan, Ava Mc Keon, Evan Mc Keon,, Liam Martin and Emily Gillespie. We also congratulate Ruth Dolan on achieving her Connacht Squad time recently. Well done to Ballinasloe Swimming Club on the great work that they do training the children.

Yellow Flag National Art Competition

As we continue to celebrate Interculturalism in our school, we congratulate Mrs Gallagher’s Third Class, Ms Dooley’s Third Class and Mr Ronaldson’s 6th Class on their success. Third Class came first in the National Art Competition and 6th Class came first in the National Media Competition. Well done to all.

St Brigid’s Day Crosses

Congratulations to all involved in last month’s fundraising project in aid of Ballinasloe Social Services. The sale of the St Brigid’s Day crosses raised €5409. Sincere thanks to Ms Regina Power for co-ordinating this project again this year and to Ms Antoinette Blade. Sincere thanks also to Mr Anthony Blade who continues to give willingly and generously of his time to pass on the craft of making these crosses to future generations.

Bee Spelling Competition

Congratulations to Matthew O’ Halloran 6th Class who represented Creagh NS at the recent Bee Spelling Competition in Galway. Matthew did very well in the competition and was placed in the top 16 spellers in the region. Well done Matthew.

10 at 10

The school participated in the “10 at 10” event. This involved all staff and pupils engaging in physical activity at 10a.m. on February 10th for 10 minutes. Sincere thanks to Mrs Mary Barrett and our Student Council for co-ordinating the event in the school.

Creagh NS Parents’ Association

We congratulate our Parents’ Association on their successful Table Quiz last month. We acknowledge their great work and support.

School Visits

Christmas Confessions

The priests of the parish visited the school for Christmas Confessions on December 12th.

Diocesan Advisors’ Visit

Fr Mc Inerney and Sr Patrice visited the school in their roles as Diocesan Advisors on March 21st and they spoke highly of the children’s standard of work in Religion.

Community Garda Visits

Sergeant Christy Browne has been visiting the pupils over the past few weeks.

Ballinasloe Town Band Visit

Members of the Ballinasloe Town Band visited the school on January 25th.

Garbally Students host science workshops in Creagh NS

Pupils from Garbally College, many of them past pupils, and their teacher Ms Amanda Hurst visited the school on February 17th to host science workshops for our pupils.

We are very grateful to all who give willingly and generously of their time to visit the pupils in our school.

Ballinasloe Social Services

Representatives from Ballinasloe Social Services, Mr Padraig Ó Ceithearnaigh Chairperson, Ms Annette Lynagh and Ms Teresa Coughlan (Manager) attended a school assembly to accept a cheque from the school. Mr Padraig Ó Ceithearnaigh thanked all of those involved in the making and selling of the St Brigid’s Day Crosses which raised €5409 in aid of Ballinasloe Social Services.

Bishop Kirby’s Visit

Bishop Kirby, Bishop of Clonfert and School Patron will visit the Confirmation class on May 2nd.

Health and Safety

A representative from Allianz, the school’s insurance company was invited to the school for a walk around the premises. He also reviewed the School’s Health and Safety Statement.

The annual service of the school’s fire safety equipment took place earlier this month.

Dentist Visiting the School

Please note the dentist will visit 2nd and 6th classes on April 28th here at the school.

Other School Events Since Our Christmas Newsletter

Christmas Plays

Our sincere thanks to the staff for all of the lovely Christmas Plays/Performances in December.

Carol Singing

Well done to the Sixth Class pupils and their teachers for raising €830 in aid of Ballinasloe Social Services and the Lions Club. Cheques for €415 were issued to each of these organisations.

Catholic Schools Week 2017

The school celebrated Catholic Schools Week, which began on January 29th. Fr O’ Donovan celebrated a prayer service with the 6th class pupils and their teachers.

Engineers’ Weeks: Engineers’ Week took place from March 6th-10th. Sincere thanks to the school’s Science co-ordinator, Mrs Aine Bleahene who organised a range of events for pupils.

Seachtain na Gaeilge:

Seachtain na Gaeilge took place from Friday March 10th until Thursday March 16th. Sincere thanks to the school’s Gaeilge co-ordinator Ms Majella O’ Rourke for organising a range of activities this week.

6th Class Díolachán Cáca (Cake Sale)

A Díolachán Cáca (Cake Sale) was hosted by the 6th class pupils and their teachers on Thursday March 16th. €1973 was raised and all of this money will be donated to this year’s project in Tanzania. We thank you most sincerely for your very generous support of this event. We were delighted to see so many dropping into the school on that day to share a cupán tae agus cúpla focail. Míle buíochas to all staff involved and a special word of thanks to the 6th class pupils and their teachers, Mrs Bleahene and Mr Ronaldson.

Fun Friends/Friends for Life Meeting Parents/Guardians of the 6th class pupils attended an information meeting on March 7th. The Friends for Life Programme commenced with 6th class on March 9th. We thank the Board of Management for supporting this initiative in our school. We are delighted to have four teachers trained to facilitate these programmes. 4th, 5th and 6th class pupils have been benefitting from the Friends for Life Programme and we hope to introduce the Fun Friends Programme into some of our Junior classes from September.

BIZ World

Ms Dolan’s 5th Class participated in the BIZ World Programme earlier this week. Mr Geraghty’s 5th Class will have an opportunity to participate in it after Easter. We thank Ms Celine O’ Connor and her colleague Ms Caroline Fahy from Bank of Ireland, for co-ordinating this programme in our school.

Voluntary Contribution Scheme

We are very grateful to parents/guardians for their ongoing support to the school’s Voluntary Contribution Scheme. The scheme will be reviewed by the Board of Management before the end of this school year to evaluate if the changes made this year have been effective.

Reminder please that if your child is absent form school, a note must be provided. Please use the Absence Notes at the back of the School Journal (Senior Infants-6th).

Contact Details

Please contact the school secretary if your contact details have changed. We are also hoping to compile a database of email addresses for use from September 2017. We will be in contact with you during the last term to collect this information.

Use of Social Media

We ask you to remain vigilant in relation to your child’s use of social media. We continue to remind our students of the importance of showing respect at all times when communicating with each other. We will notify parents/guardians of any concerns that are brought to our attention. Please take time to read our new Anti Cyber Bullying Policy, which came into effect on February 28th 2017 following ratification by the Board of Management.

Communion and Confirmation 2017

We wish those preparing for the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation the very best of luck over the coming weeks.

We congratulate our Confirmation Class on their recent Commitment Ceremony. Sincere thanks to Fr Garvey for celebrating this ceremony with the pupils, to the class teachers Mrs Bleahene and Mr Ronaldson for preparing them and to our choir, the 5th class pupils, accompanied by Ms Dooley and directed by Mrs Barrett.

Confirmation will take place on Saturday May 13th at 11a.m. in St Michael’s Church.

First Holy Communion will take place Saturday May 27th at 11a.m. in St Michael’s Church.

Our Sympathy

Congratulations

Easter Holidays

The school will close on Friday April 7th 2017 @ 12.30p.m. The school will re- open on Monday April 24th @ 9.20a.m.

School Closures in May:

Monday May 1st: Public Holiday

Wednesday May 3rd: Staff Training Day in New Primary Language Curriculum: School will close on this day to facilitate this training day for all teaching staff as directed by the Department of Education and Skills.

School Closures in June

Friday June 2nd: School Holiday

Monday June 5th: Public Holiday

Friday: June 23rd: School Tours for Pupils in 2nd-6th Classes. No school for all remaining classes on this date.

School Calendar for 2017/18

The school calendar for 2017/18 will be uploaded to the school website after Easter. The calendar will be included in the new school journals and a hardcopy will issue to all families in September.
