Dear Parents/ Guardians,

Please note the following information in our March Newsletter.

Commemoration of the 1916 Rising

A number of activities have been happening in classrooms to commemorate the 1916 Rising. Many thanks to everyone involved and for your support at home. A special word of thanks to Ms Blade and her 4th class for setting up a fantastic 1916 Museum in the school hall recently. We are very grateful for the many artefacts that were given to us on loan for the day. Our thanks also to the Fifth/Sixth Class Pupils and their teachers, Mrs Gallagher, Mr Ronaldson and Mrs Mc Cann for their 1916 Rising Play which will be performed as part of our celebrations for Proclamation Day on Tuesday March 15th. Parents/guardians of the pupils in Mrs Gallagher’s and Mr Ronaldson’s classes are welcome to attend the second performance of the play, which will take place at 1.30p.m. in Halla Uí Bhruadair (school hall).

Proclamation Day Tuesday March 15th: The national flag will be raised, Amhrán na bhFiann will be performed and school proclamation(s)will be read aloud, followed by the 1916 Rising Play.

Congratulations to our All Ireland Swimmers

Creagh National School was very well represented at the Irish Minor School Championship held in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin last month. We were delighted to celebrate their success at our school assembly. Well done to all of our swimmers who put in outstanding performances on the day in individual and relay races: Kayla Mc Keon, Evan Mc Keon, Liam Martin, Leon Mc Keon, Charlie Mooney, Ava Mc Keon, Ruth Dolan, Tara Mc Keon, James Mooney, Sheenagh Hanrahan, Sarah Dolan, Emma Mc Greal, Ailbhe Hanrahan, Conor Hogan, Adam Mc Greal and Hugh Killeen. Congratulations to their coaches and all involved in their great success at Ballinasloe Swimming Club. Full results and details are available on the club website.

Credit Union Quiz Team

Our thanks to our two quiz teams who represented our school at the second round of the Credit Union Competition: Under 13 John Devine, James Mooney, Luke Feehily and Masib Jawad; Under 11 Ben Feehily, Xi Ge Kennedy, Danny Killeen, Niall Jennings. Many thanks to all involved in preparing them and special word of thanks to Mrs Bleahene for the additional work with our quiz teams at lunch time and for compiling endless lists of questions!

Spikeball Team in Connaught Final

Our spikeball team members, Evan Hayes, James Mooney, Conor Madden, John Devine, Derrick Woha, Shane Clarke, Adam Mc Greal and Wictor Piwonski did very well representing Creagh NS in the Connaught finals in Ballinasloe recently. Many thanks to their coaches, teaching staff members, Mrs Caroline Gallagher and Ms Antoinette Blade for their great work.

Athletics Competition

Congratulations to Charlie Naughton, Shane Fitzpatrick, Adam Mc Greal, Ava Mc Keown, Roisin Grealy, Mya Kelly and Emma Mc Greal who participated in the recent Connacht Indoor Athletics Competition. Best of luck to Charlie, Ava, Shane and Adam who have qualified for the All Ireland Indoor Athletics Competition, taking place in Athlone over the next two week-ends. We wish them the very best of luck!

Irish Dancing World Championships

Best of luck to Amy Costello, Niamh Costello, Ciara Lohan, Daria Plaksiy and Victoria Plaksiy who will be participating in the Irish Dancing World Championships in Scotland at Easter. Go n-éirí an t-ádh libh.

Engineers’ Week

Many thanks to Mrs Bleahene for organising a range of trips for Engineers’ Week which was celebrated recently.

World Book Day

Our pupils celebrated World Book Day over two days, March 3rd and March 4th. There were lots of interesting and colourful characters to be seen around our school! We continue to encourage all of our pupils to read and enjoy books.

Donations to our School Library

We are very grateful for the many books donated recently to our school library.

First Confession

First Confession takes place for the pupils in 2nd class on Tuesday April 12th at 7.30p.m. in Creagh Church. Our thanks to the class teachers Ms Power and Ms Moran for all of their work, preparing the pupils for this sacrament.

Commitment Ceremony

The Commitment Ceremony for 6th Class pupils preparing for Confirmation takes place on Tuesday April 26th at 7.30p.m. in Creagh Church. Our thanks to the class teachers, Mrs Gallagher and Mr Ronaldson for preparing the pupils for this ceremony.

First Holy Communion and Confirmation

We encourage those preparing for the sacraments (First Holy Communion and Confirmation) to attend Mass at the weekends in preparation for these great events. Reminder of the dates: First Holy Communion Saturday April 23rd at 11a.m. in St Michael’s Church and Confirmation Saturday May 14th at 11a.m. in St Michael’s Church.

School Choir

Our school choir is busy preparing for First Holy Communion and Confirmation ceremonies. We thank the pupils from 4th and 5th classes for their hard work. Sincere thanks to the organist, Ms Dooley and choir directors, Mrs Bleahene, Mrs Barrett and Ms Blade.

Child Protection Policy Annual Review

We are currently reviewing our school’s Child Protection Policy. Please submit feedback to the following email: childprotectionpolicyfeedback@gmail.com on or before April 11th. Please note the Designated Liaison Person for Child Protection is Ms Stephanie Keating, Principal and the Deputy Designated Liaison Person for Child Protection is Mr Noel Lohan, Deputy Principal.

Accessing School Policies

All of our policies can be downloaded from our website www.creaghns.com under the section Downloads. The password Tony2012 is required to access all policies. Alternatively, the school is happy to provide you with a hard copy.

Social Media

We continue to remind parents/guardians to be extra vigilant around your child’s use of Social Media. If we have any concerns or any issues are brought to our attention in this regard, we will make contact with you. Our primary concern at all times is for the safety and welfare of all of our students.

Closing Date for Enrolment for September 2016

The closing date for the receipt of applications is Wednesday March 16th. The Board Of Management will meet after this date to consider all applications.

Voluntary Contribution

The Board of Management wishes to thank parents for their ongoing financial support through the Voluntary Contribution Scheme.

Safety Committee Parent Representative

We are still looking for a parent representative on the school’s Safety Committee. Please inform the school secretary if you are interested in this role.

Creagh Parents’ Association

We thank our Parents’ Association for their recent very successful fundraising event “Cash for Clobber”. All funds raised will be used to purchase additional activity packs for pupils. Please see details of the great work of the Parents’ Association on our school website.

Next meeting of the Parents’ Association takes place on Tuesday March 15th at 9p.m. Please support.

Ballinasloe Fit Town

Well done to all who organised, supported and participated in the recent Ballinasloe Fit Town initiative.

Votes of Sympathy

Our sympathy to the Minton family on the recent deaths of Mr and Mrs Minton R.I.P.

Our sympathy to the Madden family on the death of Mr Frank Madden R.I.P.

Our sympathy to Mrs Frances Lyons, SNA on the death of her mother, Mrs Curley R.I.P.

We remember all families who have been recently bereaved in our thoughts and prayers.

Congratulations

Our congratulations to our staff members, Sarah on the birth of her daughter in February and to Ms Carty on the birth of her daughter in March. We wish them well.

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Our school will celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge after Easter. Details will issue in early April.

Easter Holidays

The school will close Wednesday March 16th at 12.30p.m. and re-open on Monday April 4th.
