Stay Safe Programme
It is school policy that all classes do the Stay Safe Programme every year during the months of January/February/March. Please take time to look at the content of the Stay Safe lessons, which are available online at www.staysafe.ie
Official Opening and Blessing of New Classroom
The official opening and blessing of the new classroom by our school patron Bishop John Kirby takes place this Friday at 12 noon. This classroom will be dedicated to the memory of our former Chairperson, Fr Dan O’ Donovan. Fr Dan led the work of the Board of Management in the initial and very important stages of this building project. We are very grateful to the Department of Education and Skills for funding this project. We acknowledge the great work of the design team, Dolan and Associates and of the building contractors, T.Murray & Sons. A special word of thanks to Joe Murphy our school caretaker for all of his help throughout the building process.
Congratulations to the newly elected members of our school’s Student Council from 5th and 6th Class:
Patrick Byrne, Aoibheann Fitzpatrick, Leah Clarke, Denis Kogteniov, Adam Doran, Ella Carty, Bláithín Mc Cann and Kyle Keighery. We wish the students and the Student Council coordinator, Mrs Barrett, the very best for the coming school year.
Fundraising for iPads
We thank you most sincerely for your very generous support of our recent Toy Sale which raised €5281.00. This money will be used to increase the number of iPads in the school. Sincere thanks to Ms Regina Power, Ms Antoinette Blade, Ms Patricia Rooney, all of the staff and the Parents’ Association.
No Uniform Day
€568.70 was raised from our recent No Uniform Day organised by the Student Council. This money will be donated to the Audrey Morgan Medical Fund. We send our thoughts, prayers and best wishes to Audrey and her family and wish her full recovery to good health.
We celebrated Friendship Week just before the midterm break. Pupils were involved in a range of activities throughout the week and we enjoyed a final celebration at a wonderful whole school Friendship Assembly led by pupils representing each class on Friday October 26th. Many thanks to staff for all of their work and in particular to Mrs Bleahene for coordinating this week which will now become an annual event.
Galway All Ireland Hurling Minor Champions Visit Creagh N.S.
We had a very special welcome for members of the Galway All-Ireland Hurling Minor Champions when they visited our school in September. It was a proud day for Creagh to have past pupil, Shane Jennings on the victorious team. Shane was also awarded Man of the Match for his outstanding game in the All-Ireland Final in Croke Park. Sincere thanks to Ballinasloe GAA for organising this visit and to teaching staff member Mr Shane Dolan who coordinated a great school assembly to greet members of the team.
Health and Safety Notices
Road Safety and Parking Awareness
We thank you for your full co-operation in relation to road safety and parking when dropping off and collecting children. We ask you to continue to be extra vigilant at all times. We ask all parents to please reduce speed when coming in around the church area to drop off and collect pupils.
Please continue to remind your child of the importance of keeping safe coming to and going from school, especially during these dark winter mornings and evenings. Pupils should never be alone nor should they deviate from their normal route to and from school. Seat belts should be worn at all times when travelling by car/bus while helmets should be worn when cycling. Children should never exit cars onto the roadside. We also encourage pupils to wear high visibility jackets at this time of the year. Children should use the Pedestrian lights or the lollipop lady, Mrs Madden to cross the road safely at all times. We ask parents to continue to remind their children of the importance of good behaviour when travelling to and from school by bus
Our School’s Involvement in Community Events
Official Opening of the New Dining Room in Ballinasloe Social Services
Our school was delighted to be part of the official opening of the beautiful new dining room and prayer room in Ballinasloe Social Services on Friday last. Ms Power, Ms Blade and a small group of pupils represented Creagh NS at this event. The school has been fundraising for this important and valuable service for a number of years through making and selling St Brigid’s Day Crosses.
Switching On of the Christmas Lights in Ballinasloe
We look forward to singing on Sunday November 25th as part of the Switching on of the Christmas Lights Ceremony in Ballinasloe. This event is organised by Ballinasloe Area Community Development.
Creagh N.S. Choir Supporting Girls4Girls Fundraising Event
We are very happy to be part of the Roscommon Solstice Choir’s Christmas Concert in the Town Hall on Sunday December 2nd at 8p.m. A local group, Girls4Girls, who fundraise to support education projects in Tanzania, are hosting this event. Our school has a long tradition of supporting various communities in Tanzania and we are looking forward to performing during the interval of this Christmas Concert. Tickets cost €10 and are available from www.ballinasloetownhall.com
Christmas Jumper Day
The school will participate in the Christmas Jumper Day on December 14th to support the great work of Pieta House in Ballinasloe. Mrs Barrett and the Student Council will co-ordinate this event.
Fundraising for Tanzania
Our 6th class pupils, together with their teachers, Mr Ronaldson and Ms Greene will have their annual Christmas Singalong in Ballinasloe Town Square on Friday December 14th from 11a.m. to 1p.m. All money raised will be donated to Tanzania.
Lions Club Hamper Appeal
We will continue with our tradition of donating non-perishable food items to enable the local Lions Club make up hampers for families in need this Christmas. There will be boxes in classrooms where items may be placed (e.g. tinned foods, rice, pasta, cereals, tea, coffee, soups, sugar, biscuits, etc) We thank you for your support again this year. Our student council will be working with Mrs Barrett and Mr Lohan to co-ordinate this appeal and further details will issue next month.
Gifts for Staff
We are very conscious of the financial pressures on families, particularly at this time of the year. Therefore we thank you for your full co-operation with the staff’s decision not to receive gifts at Christmas.
Sincere thanks to teaching staff member, Mrs Aine Bleahene who is organising a range of exciting events for Science week which will be celebrated next week (November 19th-24th).
Creagh National School Parents’ Association
We are very grateful to our very busy and active Parents’ Association for the great work that they do. Sincere thanks to the outgoing Chairperson, Ms Marian Canavan and to the members of the executive committee for their trojan work over the past three years. The AGM takes place on Thursday November 22nd at 8.30p.m. and we urge at least one parent/guardian to attend please. Your help and support will be greatly appreciated.
Parent Nominee to the Board of Management
A parent nominee (Mother) to the school’s Board of Management will be elected during the AGM of this Parents’ Association on Thursday November 22nd at 8.30p.m. The elected parent will serve on the Board until November 30th 2019.

Athletics: Well done to our 5th/6th Class Girls who came first in the Connacht Athletics Competition. Representing Creagh NS were Aoibheann Fitzpatrick, Clodagh Killeen, Leah Clarke, Eva Ruane and Kayla Mc Keon. Well done to all who took part in this year’s athletics competition.
Minor Schools Swimming Competiton: Well done to all who represented Creagh NS in this competition. Liam Martin won silver in U12 Butterfly, Kayla Mc Keon won silver in U12 Butterfly and Evan McKeon won Gold in the U11 IM and bronze in the U11 breaststroke. Sarah Dolan swam great and qualified for the nationals in the IM and backstroke. Matilda Kelly also put in a great performance and qualified in the backstroke. Maia Donnellan, Vivienne Naughton and Philip Costello also represented Creagh very well and each got personal best times. The girls U10 relay team, Lauren Doran, Roxy Garvey, Maia Donnellan and Matilada Kelly performed very well also. Congratulations and well done to all. Best of luck to Liam, Kayla, Evan, Matilda and Sarah who will go on to the national finals.
Ballinasloe Fair and Festival Art Competition: Congratulations to all of our pupils who participated in the Fair and Festival Art Competition. Well done to all of our prize winners. Many thanks to Mrs Gallagher who co-ordinates our school’s entries into a range of art competitions throughout the year.
Sean Meade Football Tournament: We were delighted to host the annual Sean Meade Tournament last month. Sincere thanks to teaching staff member Mr Mark Ronaldson for organising this event, which was very well supported by a number of schools. Congratulations to Creagh NS who were the winners on the day. Many thanks to the football coaches Mr Ronaldson, Mrs Bleahene, Ms O’ Rourke, Mr Geraghty and Mr Stephen Kerr. We were delighted that Sean Meade was present on the day to present the trophy and medals to the winning teams. Our thanks to Ballinasloe GAA for the use of their excellent facilities.
Hurling and Camogie Blitzes: Well done to our school teams that participated in hurling and camogie blitzes earlier this term. Sincere thanks to the coaches, Mr Geraghty, Ms Cahalan, and Ms Larkin.
After School Sports Activities
We are very grateful to those that give freely and generously of their time to provide coaching in a range of sports. We encourage pupils from 3rd-6th Classes to get involved in sport as it is a great way, not only to learn new skills, but also to make new friends.

Keeping our Children Safe Online
There will be an Anti-Cyber Bullying and Internet Safety Talk for Parents/Guardians on Tuesday November 20th 7p.m.-8.30p.m. in Gullane’s Hotel, Ballinasloe. Our two sixth class pupils will have an Anti-Cyber Bullying and Internet Safety workshop during the school day on the same date. We encourage at least one parent to attend the evening talk to hear the most up-to-date information on how we can keep our children safe online. Further details included with this newsletter.

In November We Remember
During the month of November we remember all of our family members who have passed away. Our thanks to Mrs Gallagher for the lovely “In November We Remember” display inside our main entrance door. Pupils have the opportunity to visit this display and to spend some quiet time remembering their loved ones.
Our deepest sympathy to all families who have suffered a bereavement in recent times. We remember you in our thoughts and prayers, especially at this time of year.
